San Jacinto Enduro Reboot

Camping, hard riding, variable distances, self support– the SJE may come back in 2019, possibly in October.

Eric and I headed out today in Garner Valley and scouted some of the former SJE area in Garner Valley, and also some new areas of interest. We found extensive flood damage, deep soul-sucking sand, and thigh-deep overgrowth. It was great.
The trails of Garner Valley are frequented more often by cattle than cyclists, and that’s part of what makes them so special. The area is rich in jaw-dropping beauty, history, and riding not quite like anywhere else.

The plan for the 2019 San Jacinto Enduro, if we can pull it off, will be similar to what we’ve done in years past– camping in a big pretty spot, a big day on the bike with route options, cues & gpx tracks provided for navigation, and strict adherence to self supported guidelines. The aim of the SJE is to bring people to our mountain, show off our goods, make friends, and spread the good word of self-supported riding.

SJ Enduro Update

We have loads of Enduro changes & updates.

20121005-070527.jpg

1) The route has no second loop anymore, at least not in the format we’ve used before. The more remote, “western style” second loop in the Wagon Wheel/ Morris Creek area is gone. Instead, we will be riding more Singletrack at elevation, near Idyllwild and in May Valley.
Why? Because it is good. And because the non management is hopelessly swayed, influenced by the pressure of a couple Enduro cool kids who’d gone OCD with the whole thing while the non management was checked out on vacation. Hey, pimpin ain’t easy.

What’s this mean? The route(s) are more singletracky for sure. The new big route is shorter than 2011 in distance but probably comparable in riding time. The shorter route is just more fun than it used to be.

2) We will have GPS tracks & cues for both loops ready by next Wednesday at the latest. GPS use isn’t mandatory, of course, but darned close to it. Unless you really, really know these trails you will want to use the GPS track. Especially for the big loop.

3) We will let the start list shake out another week, then set it in stone next Friday. No wait list after that, just a start list.

4) The food drive is for real. Don’t bring last year’s pumpkin pie filling. Fess up the good stuff.

5) There’s an informal pre-ride of the route changes heading out from Hub Cyclery tomorrow, Saturday. Come ride if you can make it. Or come another time. Let’s ride, holler.

6) Here’s the rundown of the routes as they stand now:
“Short” route
Thomas/Rouse/Control rd… Tollgate (same so far)
Idyllwild.. through town, Tahquitz View/South Ridge/Ridgeline/Log Pile/Snakeskin/Spine/2nd Bro/road/Missing Link, etc, home.

Long Route
Thomas/Rouse/Control rd… (Same so far)
Rattlesnake/Fuel Break/The Big O loop/Hub/Idyllwild…
Through town for restock…
Tahquitz View/South Ridge/Middle South Ridge/Snakeskin/Cahuilla/1st Bro/Lazy Bones/road/Bonita Vista/Meadow/road/Spine/2nd Bro/Grindstone/road/3rd Bro/Secret/Missing Link/etc/home.

Start List is Full, Wait List is Up

We filled pretty darned fast this year.

20120917-065150.jpg

It took about 24 hours to fill up. Didn’t sign up in time? Don’t despair. We have a wait list started, and there aren’t many people on it yet.

Other info to know right now:
– In lieu of entry fees, which we never charge, we will suggest a donation of two cans of food. We are working with a local food bank on this, we will provide more detail soon.
– We still need to make a gpx track & cues for new first loop. The non-management’s calendar is kinda full right now, but has a non-managey day set aside for it on Oct 2nd. If’n any of you are available to knock it out before then, please let us know.
– We will host a pre-ride of the critical Singletrack section from the first loop, plus the entirety of the second loop on September 29th. Kinda like we did last year. Love connections and all, maybe.
– Seriously, get on that wait list if you weren’t one of the lucky callers. K?
– We will have an email list going out with all the pertinent info. Start time, location, camping info, all that stuff. That’ll come around the time of the new gpx file.

Enduro Start List is Open!

The start list is open!

Click on over to the Enduro page to get yourself signed up.
The ride will probably fill very fast this year. Not sure you can make it? Please don’t sign up yet.
We want to fill the ride. There will be a no-show list published, as other self-supported rides are adopting. It’s the next best thing to tar & feathers. 😉

So on that note, the doors are open. Be nice. No Wal Mart riots please. See you on Oct 27th.

Enduro Route is Looking Good

The new & improved Enduro route is just about ready.

The first loop is getting some changes. It’s an even better route, albeit a little longer and yes, even harder. The changes are as follows:
-coming into Idyllwild, we will go up South Circle drive instead of Saunders Meadow.
-Tahquitz View
– South Ridge fire road
– South Ridge Singletrack, Traverse, down to May Valley rd.
– Log Pile/Snakeskin/Second Brother/Grindstone/Secret/Missing Link/Rage through the sage/Tunnel of Love

We need to redo the GPS track on the first loop.
Conditions are good. Most of the Thomas Mountain climb (and the Pole Line trail) were graded in June, and still looking good after the recent rains.
Morris Creek Singletrack is still chunky as ever.
The water flow at Cow Pie Spring is very weak. 😦
Ramona Trail is in great shape.

Once we redo the first loop GPS the route will come available. It’d be great to post the gpx file here… that’s an open solicitation for you tech heads to clue me in as to how to do that. 🙂

The 2012 San Jacinto Enduro is coming!

The 2012 San Jacinto Enduro is set for October 27th.

20120731-065245.jpg

Some early facts:
– We will be starting and ending in town, rather than at the campsite.
– The course is getting adjusted for the change of start location, along with some other course changes.
– Online sign up will be made available in early September on the Enduro page.
– Entries will be capped for a sub-50 rider field.

Spaghetti Dinner at The Hub

Join us for carb loading Friday at 5:30

We’ll have spaghetti with red sauce (meatballs on the side for the carnivorous), bread & cheese. It’s coming from none other than Cafe Aroma, one of Idyllwild’s finest restaurants/social clubs.
Your special HUB Cyclery cost for this meal is five bucks a head.
Map to The HUB.

Edit: Please drop a line to the Enduro email addy if you think you might come. We’ll order accordingly.
See you there.
