The 2024 Sideshow and Grand Depart crews faced memorable conditions in this spring’s rendition of the Stagecoach 400.

Six riders, mostly familiar faces, embarked on the Sideshow. Adventures were had, deserts were crossed in the counter clockwise fashion, and all had scratched about halfway through the loop.

We all watched the Sideshow play out, and the forecast did not improve… The route was officially shortened to avoid flooding and mud. While the temperatures were cooler, it came with pouring rain, two storms back to back for the Grand Depart- the first hit around 4am Saturday morning, and the second came later that evening, flooding urban San Diego and bringing snow to the mountains.

The fastest few riders actually stayed ahead of the rain, creating quite a gap ahead of the rest of the field. A few adventurous souls braved white-out snow conditions, but many of the mid pack grouped together in locations with lodging to wait out the worst of the storms overnight. Fish Creek Wash was hardpacked and fast rolling, Coyote Canyon was peanut butter after the willows for miles. All in all, the finisher rate was quite high considering the conditions, thanks to the high level of experience among the riders.
